Inviting Debate

Inviting Debate exists to stimulate discussion about the goals of society.
Where are we heading?

Where do we want to be?

In democracies around the world, citizens get to vote on how they will be governed. The choices offered, however, seldom include anything but different approaches to expanding economic activity.

After several decades where public policy has put maximizing economic expansion ahead of all other concerns, we are discovering that it is not leading to a golden age.

Inviting Debate aims:

Could sustainability replace economic expansion as the goal of society?

Establishing a Reference

The eight point outline of sustainability provides a reference. Without a reference, the word "this" can not be used in clear direct questions. Even though the outline is greatly simplified, it is too long to include in a sentence.

Once the reference is known, however, discussion can be easily initiated. It becomes possible to approach public forums and ask: "Is 'this' the direction in which our societies must head?" When this question, in any of its many forms, is addressed by the democratic process it will lead to the mandate needed to redirect the collective power of society. At least, consideration of the question and the guidelines it refers to contribute to the overall strategy.

We will succeed in changing direction and finding sustainable ways to live.
