In a March 30, 2000 letter to Joe Jordan M.P., Paul Martin wrote:

"I am writing this letter to thank you for providing me with the inspiration for a very important measure introduced in the 2000 budget, tabled last month."

After describing the budget section speaking about well-being measures, Martin went on to say:

"I know you have spent many years working with stakeholders in the environmental community, as well as with business leaders and government members, pressing ahead to gather support for this crucial initiative. As I indicated in my speech, I firmly believe that, while the sum of money is small, we may well look back on the introduction of this initiative as the most important measure in the budget in terms of preserving our environment.

For this reason I repeat my thanks to you for bringing the importance of environmental and sustainable development indicators to the forefront, and I watch the progress of your own private member's bill with interest."
