June Second Date Set
to discuss
Well-Being Measurement
in the
House of CommonsMotion M-385 which represents the Canada Well-Being Measurement Act has been scheduled for discussion in the House of Commons on June 2.
After more than two years in waiting, the Canada Well-Being Measurement Act has been drawn for consideration in the House of Commons. Due to changes in House procedures, the Act is represented as a Motion which, if passed, will instruct the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainability to come up with a plan for "the definition, development and periodic publication of a set of indicators of the economic, social and environmental well-being of people, communities and ecosystems in Canada."
Such a plan exists in the form of the Canada Well-Being Measurement Act. The Chair of the Standing Committee, the Honourable Charles Caccia MP, has supported the Act since its early drafting stage.
You can help now by contacting your MP (again if you are among those who have helped already) and let him or her know that the issue is scheduled for June 2nd and that he or she should provide support. Contact information for MPs is available from:
1 (800) O CANADA (1 (800) 622-6232 ) or at: www.parl.gc.ca/common/index.asp?Language=E (Language=F) for French.
If you are not already on the list for the 7th Generation Initiative, send a note to: sustain5 [at] web.ca
There could be additional actions necessary to make sure that the measuring system devised includes citizens' input about what should be measured and to make sure that the information is freely available without political filters. The Canada Well-Being Measurement Act proposes that unbiased provision of the information be achieved by having the measuring system managed by the Sustainability section at the Auditor General's Office. There may be other ways to achieve non-partisan reporting, but it would not be acceptable for the information to be controlled by the Party in power, no matter what Party that might be.
Questions and comments are welcome.
