The re-Cycles Bicycle Co-op is a not-for-profit, volunteer-staffed, bicycle recycling shop, based in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada). We promote bicycle transportation:
by repairing donated bikes that we sell to the community.
by providing an equipped shop and bike repair know-how so that you can maintain and repair your own bike.
Please note! We do not fix your bike for you. But if you wish to do so yourself there's always a Head Mechanic on hand to guide you if needed.
Jan. 04, 2009 - The shop has reopened after the Holiday shutdown.
Nov. 30, 2008 - There will be no Sunday volunteer shift on Dec. 7th.
Nov. 3, 2008 - Introducing "Basics Night". While the shop will be closed on Thursday evenings for the winter, on the third Thursday of each month we will have sessions for volunteers to learn the basics of bike repair. Please see our Basics Night page.
Oct. 23, 2008 - There will be no Sunday volunteer shift on October 26. And Effective Nov. 1st there will be a change to the Sunday shift. Please read complete details here.
Oct. 22, 2008 - The shop will be closed tonight (Wed). Our apologies...
Oct. 20, 2008 - Effective Nov. 1st the shop will be closed on Thursday nights until we revert to Spring / Summer hours on April 1st. This is due to both lower seasonal demand and to also give our team of volunteer Head Mechanics some time off, as everyone has been working hard since we moved into the new location and dealt with new challenges.
Oct. 1, 2008 - There will be no Sunday volunteer shift on Thanksgiving weekend.
July 6, 2008 - There will be no Sunday volunteer shift on July 13.
June 22, 2008 - The shop will be closed on July 1st for Canada Day.
June 1, 2008 - We now have a "Facebook Group"!
May 19, 2008 - Photos from the Big Move can be found here.
May 19, 2008 - We were featured in last Thursday's Ottawa Citizen in an article called "Five great places for a bike tune-up". The print edition had photos for each shop mentioned, while there's only one for the web version. Oh, and we also got a fan posting in the bike section of Ottawa Craigslist!
May 13, 2008 - As an experiment, we are adding Sunday afternoons to our schedule for the Summer effective May 18th, but this will be a special day for volunteers only! - no sales or do-it-yourself repair (but we will still take in donations). This is to help us process the large backlog of bikes building up in the basement, as we have lots of people wanting to buy bikes and never enough of them ready for sale. The shift will be from 3pm - 6pm, and staffed by Mark.
May 13, 2008 - We welcome our first-ever Volunteer Coordinator, Melinda Roy! She will be implementing some new ideas, in addition to keeping our volunteer records up to date. If you have ever filled out a volunteer form you'll be hearing from her! If you have any questions please send her an email.
May 12, 2008 - It's been a bit of a whirlwind since we moved back in early April! Every aspect has gotten busier than the usual Spring madness - more bikes sold, more inquiries, more volunteers, more do-it-yourselfers. Our old shop could get hectic, and we often needed two staffers to handle the load. Our new shop has two rooms, so that has made double-staffing an imperative. If you use the shop a lot and would like to help us out please consider becoming a Shop Assistant. Details at our Volunteer Page.
Please note! Each shift at our shop is staffed by a volunteer "Head Mechanic". We make every effort to be open during our posted times, but there are the odd occasions when the Head Mechanic is not being able to attend the shift for whatever reason (and could not find a replacement on short notice). We appreciate your understanding if this happens, and apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. That said, when you are using our shop please feel free to say Thanks to our core volunteers! They are giving their free time to help meet the needs of the Ottawa cycling community.
