In "Presenting the Publicovers", it is noted that "the origins of the Publicover family can ge traced back to a tiny village that many centuries ago lay in Swiss territory. The village was called Puppikon, and it would seem that the family name that become Publicover once meant 'Puppikofer- the dewller in the village of Puppikon.'" The name Puppikofer seems to have been the original name, and a coat of arms was issued to the family under that name. The people of this village spoke a German dialect. Franz Bubeckopfer arrived in the village of Epfenbach, on the Nechar river (in what is now southwestern Germany), during the early 1700's. The locals were unfamiliar with his family name, and thus there were many variations on the spelling. This problem also plagued the family in Nova Scotia, and over time the name became Publicover.
