Part Two: Topical Narratives
Chapter 9: Law and OrderOn 1 December 1640 Kenelm Winslow, brother to Edward Winslow who had already been governor twice, was fined ten shillings for
neglecting his position as surveyor of the highways. In 1645, the year after his brother had served his third term as governor, Kenelm
Winslow complained to the court that he could not get justice in his suit against John Maynard, and a committee appointed by the court,
consisting of Myles [p.157] Standish, William Paddy, Edmond Eddenden, Edward Case, Anthony Annable, Anthony Thacher, and
Thomas Tupper, determined that "the sayde charge of injustice is altogether untrue." On 3 March 1645/46, Roger Chandler successfully
sued Kenelm Winslow in court, and Winslow was ordered to return to Chandler's daughter (who apparently had been his maid) her
clothes which he had retained. On the same day Winslow was committed to prison for uttering opprobrious words against the church at
Marshfield, saying they were all liars.3Plymouth Colony: Its History and People 1620-1691

Winslow, Kenelmxxx ---A brother of Edward Winslow, q.v., Kenelm was not in the 1627 division, but arrived at Plymouth before 1 January 1632/33
when he became a freeman (PCR 1:5). On 8 January 1632/33 Francis Eaton confirmed that he had sold his dwelling house to Kenelm and
Josias Winslow (PCR 1:8). On 6 January 1633/34 Samuel Jenny, son of John Jenny, was apprenticed to Kenelm Winslow, joyner, for
four years (PCR 1:24). On 22 January 1633/34 Josias Winslow sold his part of the dwelling he had purchased from Francis Eaton (PCR
1:24). Kenelm Winslow married in June 1634 Ellen (or Eleanor) (Newton) Adams, widow of John Adams, q.v. (PCR 1:30); she died at
Marshfield 5 December 1681, eighty-three years old (Marshfield VR). At the time of this marriage, Kenelm Winslow of Marshfield put up
security to pay James Adams, son of John, Lb5 when he became of age, and this was done and recorded on 26 December 1651 (PCR
2:176). On 22 February 1635/36 John Gardiner, a servant of Kenelm Winslow, had the rest of his time turned over to George Kenrick
(PCR 1:37). Kenelm received various land grants and served on committees and juries (PCR). On 1 December 1640 he was fined for
neglecting his duty as an elected highway surveyor (PCR 2:4).
