GWB visit legal summary

LSO would like to express our immense gratitude to all the volunteers from Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto who helped make the legal support operation a success. We have presently contacted most of those arrested during the demonstrations and advised them of their options.

Arrests: 23 in total, 10 released without charges.

Breakdown:

  • Ottawa - 13 total, only 3 charged;
  • Gatineau - 10 total, all charged with offences ranging from breach of peace to assault.

LSO is helping many of those charged to find legal representation and to assist in their defence however we can. Complaints and possible legal action may be forthcoming re: police brutality in several of the arrests.

Missing persons:

Several people were reported missing but were located before the end of the day on November 30. Two people were not located but their contacts were not concerned for their safety. One person was reported missing to police, and was eventually located a couple of days later (by her friends, not by the police).

The two sound vans that were seized by police were released after being impounded . There was a fee charged for releasing one of the vans. Individuals at C.U.P.E. chipped in to pay the fee.

Please call / contact Paul or Laura if you need any legal help dealing with an arrest during the Bush visit or if you have any other legal questions.
