MailBox project
The purpose of this project is to provide easy to manage mailbox
services with the potential to have a very large number of mailboxes
supported by a single host. Remote users should be able to pick up their
mail using common utilities such as Eudora and PINE.
This mailbox server can support addresses within a virtual domain by
making use of the services of the
MailDomain project. User authentication
will be handled by the LoginDomain.
Status
Software technology has been chosen, and has been in use since August.
Tech Notes:
- Cyrus IMAP server installed.
- Work on new poppassd program for changing passwords with Eudora
needed. Contrib program needs to be distributed.
- A CGI needs to be written to allow other people who are not using
Eudora to easily change their password.
IMAP
The Cyrus IMAP server was chosen for this project. Certain features
are hilighted:
- Server is designed to serve mailboxes to users that do not have a
login account for the machine with the server / Login users and Mailbox
users are independant of each other.
- An external User/Password checking utility can be utilized.
FLORA will make use of a HESIODdistribution of the names, and a SHADOW
password file, documented as part of the LoginDomain documentation.
- Separate password utility allows for easier integration with POPpasswd
utility used with Eudora.
- Server supports News/Mailboxes using the IMAP protocol (For
PINE/etc users, as well as supporting POP services used by Eudora/etc.)
