(I am a constituent of Councillor Madeleine Meilleur, MPP Claudette Boyer, and MP Mauril Belanger. I live at in Sandy Hill) Russell McOrmond 609-440 Wiggins Private Ottawa, ON K1N 1A7 http://www.flora.ca/russell/ I am writing to invite you and/or appropriate staff to the Open Source Weekend which is being held in Ottawa on Saturday Jan 25 and Sunday Jan 26. Full details about the event and schedule can be found at http://www.osw.ca/ This is an important opportunity for you to learn about Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) which is becoming more and more important to citizens, business, and governments around the globe. Many of us believe that FLOSS and the Internet are two co-dependent disruptive technologies which are already changing the way that people communicate with each other, do business and interact with government. On Sunday there will be opportunities to hear from business leaders and government representatives on the Business of Open Source Software (BOSS). Before and after the formal presentations there will be opportunities for hands-on demonstrations and informal discussions with people who will be able to help you to understand the importance of this technology. People will be available to discuss everything from the nitty-gritty details of the internals of the technology to discussions at a higher public policy level. Our community has become very active in public policy consultations in recent years. Submissions were made to the Copyright Consultation in 2001 with our community forming a website and discussion group to respond to the government at http://www.digital-copyright.ca/ (Example submissions at: http://www.digital-copyright.ca/links.shtml#reformprocess ). Many members from our community also attended regional summits. We have also been involved in other consultations including the Innovation Agenda (Example: http://www.flora.ca/innovation-2002.shtml ) , submissions to the CRTC (Example: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/Broadcast/eng/NOTICES/2002/2002-32/mcormond_r.html ) , submissions relating to competition policy (Example: http://www.flora.ca/copyright-2001-cmpda-reply.shtml ) and multiple submissions to the Department of Justice on Lawful Access http://www.lexinformatica.org/cybercrime/ We would be very pleased if you could attend the Open Source Weekend, and learn more about how Free/Libre and Open Source Software will become very important to the future of our governments, businesses and society. If you would like to discuss public policy around this type of software, I am always available to discuss this with representatives or government bureaucrats. Thank you. --- Russell McOrmond, Internet Consultant: <http://www.flora.ca/> Any 'hardware assist' for communications, whether it be eye-glasses, VCR's, or personal computers, must be under the control of the citizen and not a third party. -- http://www.flora.ca/russell/
