This is from the perspective of a commercial company that considers themselves to be a software services company (Like my self-employed company) as opposed to a software manufacturing company (an old-economy company). There are ways to 'sit on the fence' - I believe that the BSD, X11 and similar licenses are such licenses. It says "This specific version is Free Software, and you are allowed to re-license a derivative". This means people like myself can license a derivative GPL while others can put a proprietary copyright on their derivatives. The GPL and Proprietary people have 'made their choice' as to which economy they want to participate in (and cannot use each others software, which is what each of us wants), but those who don't want to make a choice still have valid options. I just don't see the PHP4 license as being one of those valid options. > This is why the GPL helps to stop forking and to advance > development. The GPL doesn't stop forking - it just more clearly defines who can and cannot use the software much like a proprietary license does. Those who are unwilling to live with the license are being told to go elsewhere, write their own, etc. --- Russell McOrmond, Internet Consultant: <http://russell.flora.org/work/> Green Party of Canada: Convention 2000 <http://Ottawa2000.flora.org/> Ralph Nader for U.S. President! <http://www.votenader.org/> Problems @ FLORA <http://www.flora.org/flora.status/>
