It would be bad, but 
not nearly as disastrous in terms of short term user costs  
as if Microsoft went belly-up or split into multiple entities and 
all users of the software were left in the lurch.  Lawyers, 
stockborkers, and bankruptcy trustees don't do tech support 
very well.
