Mr Shulgan,

In your article you quoted Wayne Caccamo, by e-mail, as saying:

"Since Linux is not really owned by anyone but its inventor and
confidants, Linux will not always be trusted for mainstream enterprise use
unless a large global IT supplier is willing to stand behind Linux. And
this is exactly what HP is stepping up to do."

While I applaud HP for recognizing the business advantage of Linux, I do
believe that a business the size of HP should probably read a software
license before making use of that software. Most of the software that is
typically bundled together and called Linux is licensed under the GNU
General Public License. Rather that "not really owned by anyone", it is
in fact owned by everyone, the "general public". Unlike users of software
that has a single owner, Linux users are not dependent on "its inventor
and confidants", giving software licensed with the General Public License
a long-term credibility that is not possible with proprietary software.

I am a local Ottawa value add consultant for Free Software (Free Speech
not Free Beer!), offering Intranet, Internet and LAN services. I work
with publicly licensed software because of it's long term supportability,
only working with proprietary licensed software during the migration phase
from proprietary to open software systems.

P.S. The topic that I just wrote about is a common misconception. My
letter is just a stripped down version of another recent article I wrote
on the topic:

If you are looking for someone to contact whenever writing articles
relating to Free Software, I am more than willing to offer that service.
