Microsoft's goal of taking for themselves that which
is and should remain in the public domain applies to 
private entities in many more areas than technology.  

Their strategy for doing so is also not new: cf. the 
Catholic Church, medicine or any other guilded profession,  
infant formula adverts, the professionalization of 
government.  You "convince" the law and standards bodies 
that there is a "better" way which happens to involve some 
proprietary products or services that can only be provided 
by yourself.
