Flora Community WEB: Organizational Overview

Summary

FLORA is a volunteer managed service to community organizations that makes use of electronic publishing and discussion tools to aid these other organizations in their own missions. The organizational structure of FLORA is deliberately kept to a minimum, in order to free volunteers to make maximum use of their own, and the FLORA shared, skills and resources.

Hard resources such as computing facilities are provided by sponsors. All other resources such as WEB page design, discussion group management and training are handled by volunteers.

Overview

The hardware used by the FLORA Community WEB is owned by Russell McOrmond, and is a shared resource with his consulting business.

The hardware resources of FLORA will be run in a sustainable fashion such that the services that FLORA offers can continue to be free to the community. Financial support will come through advertising (Sponsors list), public sector grants and from consulting services offered by Russell McOrmond.

While the computing resources for FLORA are owned by one individual, it should be noted that the informational resources published and provided by the community are owned by the community. In this way, FLORA Community WEB is a service provider to individuals and organizations within the community in much the same way that a public utility such as the telephone company offers services. The intent and design of FLORA Community WEB is to be one of many such organizations offering services to the community, and is specifically set up not to centralize all the resources of the community into one organization.

There is an ongoing discussion about the nature of FLORA and the motivations of it's volunteers. For more information, please read the FLORA.org helpdesk discussion group.
