In the Host Name box, type ftp.flora.org.
From the drop down menu in the Host Type box, select Automatic detect.
In the User ID box, type the username assigned to you by FLORA.
In the Password box, type the password assigned to you by FLORA. The password will be blanked out for security. Just to the left of the Password box is the Save Password box. If a checkmark does not already appear in this box, click on it. This will save you from having to type in your password each time you wish to connect to your FLORA directories.
The Account box can be left blank.
Under Initial Directories, type the name of your group on FLORA in the Remote Host directory box. For instance, in setting up the Session Profile for the Home Based Learning Group the name of the directory on FLORA is hbln and that is what I typed into the Remote Host Directory box. When you connect to FLORA this will put you in the directory where the file for your webpage will be stored. If you type nothing into the Remote Host Directory box you will still be able to connect to FLORA; however, you will connect to the directory one level up from where you want to be and will then need to change to the directory named after your group.
In the Local PC box, type the file path to the directory where you will store your working copies of your webpages on your own computer.
The Comment box is optional. You can use it to further describe the contents of the site you are setting up a connection for.
It is very important at this stage to click on the Save button near the top of the Session Profile dialogue box. Once you have clicked on the Save button the information you have entered will be saved from session to session. Otherwise you will need to reenter the connection information each time you wish to connect to FLORA using ws_ftp.
Once the connection is established you are ready to begin uploading your webpage file. Near the bottom of the ws_ftp window you are presented with three possible file types for uploading, ASCII, binary, and Auto. Your webpage is an ASCII file so be sure that ASCII is selected. Click on the file in the Local System box that you wish to upload. Click on the right pointing arrow between the two file windows. Ws_ftp will upload the file to FLORA. The status of the upload will be displayed in the box at the bottom of the ws_ftp window. If your webpage has any graphic files associated with it you will need to upload those also. Graphic files are binary type files and you will need to check binary before uploading. Highlight the graphic file you wish to upload, select the right facing arrow, and ws_ftp will upload the file.
If you are using an older version of Windows you will need to rename your files with the longer .html extension.
Highlight the file in the Remote System box. Click the Rename button and you will be prompted for the new name.
It is a good habit to check your work. Open your web browser and enter the URL for your webpage. Check to make sure the page and all the graphics display properly and that any links work.
To download a file be sure that you are connected to your Internet Access Provider. If it is not already open, open ws_ftp and select the Session Profile for your account on FLORA. Click the OK button in the Session Profile box. Ws_ftp will establish a connection with FLORA and switch to the directories specified in the Initial Directories box. The status of the connection is displayed in the box at the bottom of the ws_ftp window.
