This is an issue that needs some discussion on FLORA.org
On my personal mailbox I am using filtering software (Procmain rules) to
filter messages with various patterns into other mailboxes.
The most useful one is one that checks for attachments from people
using Microsoft Outlook. This both files the email off to a mailbox I
don't read often (I scan once a month, just deleting most messages), and
sends the person in the From: an email indicating that this happened. If
Procmail supported the feature, I would just have it bounce the email.
This filters off most viruses, as most are sent from Outlook.
A second checks for russell@ and a few key domains, and filters
everything else into a secondary inbox I check less frequently.
Things are getting worse all the time with the Microsoft Viruses and
general SPAM. I am in the process of investigating EXIM
<http://www.exim.org/> as a replacement for Sendmail. The filtering with
EXIM is much easier to configure than with Sendmail, which will allow me
to configure more site-wide filtering rules.
The question becomes: what rules?
One I want to run is a filter which will simply disallow the sending of
any of the standard "executable" attachment types. This will filter out
some of the older viruses site-wide.
EG: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/examples/exim.filter
If someone sends you an attachment of this type, it asks you to re-send
it inside of a ZIP file.
fail text "This message has been rejected because it has\n\
potentially executable content $1\n\
This form of attachment has been used by\n\
recent viruses or other malware.\n\
If you meant to send this file then please\n\
package it up as a zip file and resend it."
Another is a more complex system intended for virus scanning, but which
can be used to filter/detect other aspects of an email message as well.

Discussion is appreciated. The Microsoft Virus and SPAM problem is
getting worse every day, and some tools to help combat it need to be
installed on the servers.

CANNING SPAM WITHOUT EATING UP REAL MAIL
Audrie Krause, head of the political action group NetAction, was recently
shocked to find out that her members-only email list was being blacklisted
-- blocked by an ISP -- as if it were unsolicited commercial spam. "It's
ironic because the work we do as an organization includes helping get the
message out to other activists and nonprofits about how to use email and
the Net for outreach...without spamming," Krause said. The error, which
was fixed within a day, is just one of many examples of how the war
against spam is claiming more than a few innocent casualties. ISPs often
subscribe to services that create blacklists as a way of combating the
hordes of unsolicited junk mail emailed to Internet users on a daily
basis. Unfortunately, blacklists contain an increasing number of "false
positives" -- in other words, sources of legitimate email that are being
blocked indiscriminately and without warning. Recent complaints about
blocklists have come from companies and organizations, including British
Telecom, the Libertarian Party and News.com publisher CNET Networks, among
others. [Source: CNET; Author: Stefanie Olson]
