strategies for minimizing spam?

Greetings,

A question regarding avoiding spam...

To minimize spam, I've long been avoiding putting my
main e-mail address anywhere on my website. Instead,
I've been displaying my old e-mail address, icontario@aol.com
However, it takes quite a bit more effort on my part
to watch both addresses, and also causes some
confusion for those I correspond with.

I know that I don't get very much spam at my AOL
account... I think they have some kind of spam
filters in place. My old hotmail accounts were spammed
to death, and have been abandoned. So far my
planetfriendly (POP) account gets hardly any spam,
despite the fact that the address goes out in every
e-mail newsletter I send, and has been posted by
others at other places on the web.

The spam sites all suggest keeping your e-mail
address off the internet. This is impossible for me,
because my goal is all about reaching many people,
and I want my e-mail address to be out there.

Do you display your e-mail address on your site?
How much spam do you get -- a few a day, or dozens??

The bottom line: what strategies can help minimize
spam, without closing the door to e-mail from strangers?

with thanks,
     - peter blanchard
