Subject: Some calculations for Server hosting.

A few more data points in the discussion. First question was: If the
existing connections were flooded 24Hrs a day, how much bandwidth would
that amount to?

  I currently have 2 DSL lines, 1 ADSL at 2.2/1.1Mbit (Cyberus.ca), and a
second 1.5Mbit SDSL (Achilles.net).

   (1.1+1.5) Mbit/s * 1/8 Byte/bit * 1/1024 G/M * (60*60*24) s/day
 = 27.42 GByte/day

Things never get evenly spread out over a day, so I need to assume that
what I'm actually using is much lower than that. There has been notes
that have suggested that the current bandwidth is not sufficient, so I
also need to assume that if the burstable-bandwidth was available that it
would get used. I also don't know if the times when FLORA is busy is the
same times when the 2 providers are busy, and thus we might not even be
getting that maximum rate.

If I did use that amount of bandwidth, how much money would that
represent?

  27.42GB/day * 30days/month * $7.89/GB = $6490.31/month
                                ^ Rate at 9Netweb.ca

When I look at this, and compare to the current fixed-bandwidth costs of
$700/month, I believe I need to reevaluate the move and just upgrade
current hardware. I do need to turn on packet accounting to get a more
clear idea of what I am using currently, what the maximum burstable speed
has been, and so-on.

One idea is to advertise my sys-admin services more and offer these
remote servers to my clients (those who are too large to host on current
resources, and who have the money), leaving the existing resources to the
volunteer services and to smaller clients.

Some other data points came in another message. We have a project
coming up (see http://www.commuterchallenge.net/ ) that will need a high
amount of burstable bandwidth which was part of the motivation for
determining if I should move the rest of my services (volunteer and paid)
to a Rack services as well. I had hoped I could go 6 months with such a
service for this project (Commuter Challenge is on Environment week which
is the first week of June) and then know many more of the variables.

This comparison didn't take the different processors into consideration
(The 9Net service is an Intel Pentium series, while the RaQ servers are
Strongarm chips). Some of the pre-testing and pre-building binaries I can
do on my existing servers would only apply to other Pentium-compatible
servers.

Hi Michael & Russell,

Not that these are the only two resellers out there... But this is the
price comparison that I could come up between the two of them.. The big
unknown is certainly the bandwidth. However I've tried to even out a
few things by choosing similar options...

9NetAve Costs (Start Package)
http://www.9netave.ca/services/dserver/listinounix.asp
$ 170.00/month 			x 6 	= $1020.00
$ 390.00 - 1 time setup fee		= $390.00
Intel CEL 500
128 SDRAM
10 IDE
5GB Transfer Limit (free)
+ 45 GB/month = $1417.50
($7,89 per gig/month over above)	= ??
6 month experiment = $2827.50+GST = $3025.43

Netnation.ca (NetRaQ Enterprise)
http://netnation.ca/products/dedicatedservers.cfm
$488/month = $2928.00
$149 1 time set up fee = $149.00
10.2GB HD,
128MB RAM
0-50 GB: Free
(51-100GB: $9.00/GB, 100+GB $7.50/GB)	= ??
6 month experiment = $3077.00+GST = $3292.39

Hope this helps...

Mike
