An MP MAI accountability "toolkit"
(Updated 16 June1998) This campaign now focuses on our flier and our second petition below (just updated). Also check out our Survey of MPs in Canada on the MAI and FSA.

Use the rest of this page as a resource on MP MAI action. Our campaign to hold MPs accountable on the MAI was launched last September by OPIRG-Carleton, with assistance from the Alliance for Public Accountability. A mailing was sent through the Canadian Federation of Students, and other PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups).

How it works Use our sample letter (see "front of flier" below) to request a meeting, then fax or mail it, or email right here using our MP free fax link. People are also holding their own citizens' hearings across the country. How to ensure MPs attend if invited? We suggest you first meet your MP in her/his office. S/he will usually grant your request (it's part of their job to meet constituents who request it), especially after receiving several letters that flag this issue for your MP, asking our suggested "who" questions on the MAI. Polite followup calls also help. To offer you more guidance:

Here are our campaign tools:

  • Front of flier with sample MP letter (updated 16 May 1998) (8.5"x14").
  • Back of flier introducing the MAI (updated 16 May 1998) (8.5"x14")
  • Second Petition holding the Minister to account (8.5"x11". Dated 16 June1998), titled "Canadians Call for Answers on the M.A.I."
  • Principles of Accountability relevant to the MAI (2 pages, 8.5"x11")
  • Campaign sheet on how to meet your MP (8.5"x14". The Campaign form is discontinued.)
  • In printing the above documents, adjust Page Setup to the maximum printable area (i.e. make margins zero or very small), and Printer Setup to the appropriate page size (letter or legal).
