action-forum Discussion group

WEB URL for reading: http://www.flora.org/flora.action-forum/

Email Submission Email address: action-forum@flora.org

Newsgroup name: flora.action-forum

This discussion group will be partially moderated (see the discussion of auto-moderation below) and widely distributed. Members of the discussion group should consider all postings to the group to be public.

Three types of membership are available. All members can post to the group, but differ in how they receive messages from the group:

action-forum
This is the membership that indicates that you wish to receive a copy of each posting to the group via Electronic mail.
action-forum-digest
This is the membership that indicates that you wish to receive (approximately daily) a digest of messages.
action-forum-nomail
This is the membership list that just allows you to post. You will not receive postings from the group in Email, and is intended for people who will participate through the WEB or Newsgroup forms of this group.

To subscribe to one of these lists, send an Email message to majordomo@flora.org . Leave the subject line blank and type the appropriate selection below in the BODY of your message. Remove any other text (auto signatures, for example) from the body of the message.

subscribe action-forum-digest
or
subscribe action-forum
or
subscribe action-forum-nomail

You only need to send a subscribe message if you wish to have messages you post automatically approved for the conference. If you just wish to read the conference, not contribute, and remain anonymous, you do not need to send any message.

Auto-moderation refers to a special case of a moderated discussion group where people who are already known have their postings automatically approved for submission to the group. The moderator then only needs to approve (or not approve) messages from people who are not yet known.

Why Auto-moderation? One of the common problems with open discussion groups is the proliferation of inappropriate postings, and 'hit and run' commercial posting. The aim of auto-moderation is to get the best of two different worlds: the ease of discussion group access available through public newsgroups, and the responsibility in postings seen by 'membership required' discussion groups. Add into this a moderator that will approve appropriate messages from unknown people, and you hopefully have the best of all worlds.
