I have heard the argument many times against Free Software/Open Source software that it doesn't have a single vendor and thus doesn't have anyone to blame if anything goes wrong. I have always thought of it as pure FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) and not based in any rational thinking. I would like to see someone prove me wrong: Take David up on his challenge and give us an example where this was the case. Second: If you *CAN* manage to come up with an example (and I highly doubt this), then please apply the current issues with UCITA and see if this would at all be possible in the future: http://linuxtoday.com/stories/7021.html It seems to me with UCITA that they are lobbying against their possibly being any redeeming qualities to the use of proprietary software over the alternative software fundraising models, helping in our public education of the legitimacy of Free Software. --- Russell McOrmond, Internet Consultant: <http://russell.flora.org/work/> ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sat, 3 Jul 1999 21:08:46 -0400 (EDT) From: David F. Name one successful lawsuit against any commercial software vendor for defective software. Go on, just one. (Btw, my original rant was inspired by the poster who said (or at least strongly implied) that Nortel was about to issue a report on Linux which would portray it inaccurately. I won't post so quickly any more.) -- David. - The oclug list is run automagically by Majordomo version 1.94.4 Please send mail questions to owner-oclug@list.achilles.net TO UNSUBSCRIBE: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to oclug-request@list.achilles.net
