Ghassan Khader’s words are peppered with ‘yani’ today as he surveys the damage inflicted to his office in the Karsuwa building in downtown Nablus. He inserts other Arabic words routinely into his speech when speaking English, adding a distinct and friendly flavor to his speech. Ghassan has been running his brother Hussam’s Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) office since the Palestinian parliamentarian was imprisoned by Israeli authorities 18-months ago on trumped up charges. Last night at 3am the military broke into the office, blowing the door open and rifling through his office files and those of a neighboring Islamic relief agency nearby. They ripped posters off the wall, overturned furniture and broke windows during the raid. The scene fits into the typical property destruction that accompanies such forced entries. Ghassan looks perplexed: “Yani, I was wondering why you did this? Yani, we are…barafish (I don’t know), not a military wing you know? We’re not involved in these things. We are normal people. This is a normal office open to the people. This office belongs to Hussam Khader. He belongs to the PLC and each member has their own office like this one.
