973 SYSTEMIC YEAST INFECTION I am the 41 year old man who asked about the food elimination diet. Thanks for your responses. They helped me understand that I would feel worse before better. I am beginning to feel better. Now I am to take nistatin for systemic yeast infection. Do you have any advice re: how I should expect to feel, and the pros and cons of this kind of treatment. ANSWER BY CHERIE R. REBAR, RN, ND STUDENT Nystatin, in my experience, is usually used in conjunction with Acidolphilus. Nystatin powder is usually supplied in pills or in powder form (the powder gets mixed with water or juice and tastes really bitter). Acidophilus is found in many yogurts (you will see the ingredient Lactobacillus listed). The theory behind the usage of these two together is to regulate the amount and type of yeast/fungus within the gut (intestines) to attempt to reduce some chronic problems, i.e. diarrhea caused from overgrowth, female vaginal yeast infections, tinea infections (bodily yeast), and other problems. The idea behind using both is to kill the "bad yeast/fungus" (Nystatin) while replentishing the good yeast/fungus (Adicophilus). Most pateints that I have seen do well with this therapy (although they hate the taste of Nystatin), but occasionally, like with any Rx, you will find people with an intolerance. Keep your doctor abreast of your progress and the decrease of the symptoms you are trying to control. This is the best way to monitor whether it is working for you.
